The range is largely characterised as rounded lumps, lower slopes of heather, bilberry and peat bog, the upper grass and moss with a sprinkling of rocky tops. Despite most Munro guidebooks being 'dismissive' - Geal Charn - white hill - is a pleasant walk. From here it was a case of heading up onto the southwest shoulder of Geal Charn and just slogging it over increasingly rocky terrain to the wide summit (926m). Its eastern corrie is attractive but it is On the descent, bear in mind that the steep slopes of the 'notch' between Geal Charn and Beinn Sgiath potentially cut across your path - you don't want to walk off the edge in a whiteout. We watched the excellent (hill walking weather) weather forecasts and saw the glorious photographs on Walkhighlands et al, hoping that we would feel better before the usual Atlantic depression conveyor belt kicked back in. The first time I climbed this hill was the day after the 1990 Scottish Grand Slam victory over England at Murrayfield - what a weekend ! We've had the dreaded Christmas bug! I faced gales, storms, total whiteouts, heavy snow, ice, freezing conditions or rain, wetness, mist, fog… In a good, clear day to enjoy & catch the beauty. It has a single ridge SSE of the summit, which is narrow steep sided and craggy and terminates in Carn Macoul, (805) overlooking Gleann Lochain. Geal Charn from Glen Markie I was going to continue further up the Glen to use the bridge and follow the ridge over Bruach nam Biodag but there looked to be am ATV track following the Pipers burn into the Geal Charn’s eastern corrie. I settled on the Monadhliath as the weather looked better in this area and surprised myself by getting to Garva Bridge by about 9am! Most people seems to start from Garva car park but I chose (to go to the moon) to do it this way. Trevor Williams and Phyllis Mcgibbon have both walked, climbed & bagged Geal-charn Mor. I said at the start of this report that Geal Charn Mor is arguably the easiest Corbett, and that may be so, but even the easiest of climbs can be a challenge under poor weather conditions, and I think we were all quite pleased with our days achievement in challenging conditions.
